Haji Lane began as lodges for Haji pilgrims and homes for poor Malay families. The street was filled with graffiti art and hookah cafes which remain illegal to this date. Although hookah cafes were banned, wall murals were thankfully allowed under strict regulations. Since then, Haji Lane has grown into one of Singapore's most vibrant areas filled with an eclectic mix of shops and cafes.
