The Restoran Hua Mui in Johor Bahru is a wonderful example of an old-school restaurant. Since 1946, it has been serving the original Hainanese chicken chop in Johor Bahru, according to legend.

The Hainanese Chicken Chop is the star dish at Restoran Hua Mui. The fried chicken chop, which sits on a savory sauce with peas and potato wedges, was crispy without being oily. The first cut down the centre revealed a juicy and succulent core, proof that it had been brined correctly before being cooked.

The batter was flavorful, with prominent egg and milk tastes coming through—which is remarkable since most fried chicken batters tend to be milder.

Key Differentiators:

  • The Original Hainanese Chicken Chop
  • 75 Years Of Inheriting The Spirit, Consistent

The preserved vegetable bun is one of Wee Hoi Kopitiam’s most famous buns. The preserved vegetable bun is hearty and not overly salty, with moist, not excessively salty preserved greens wrapped in a fluffy, airy, snowy-hued slightly sweet bun. With a lively bounce, the bun had excellent bite and mouth feel.

They serve all varieties of noodles. If you want, there’s also some Wu Xiang behind there. The fishballs in this restaurant are homemade, but the pork balls are purchased from a store.

Plus, Sang Heng’s soup is the power. It includes pork socket bones, shrimp, anchovies, dried sole fish, and other ingredients. The broth has a medium body with layers of savoriness and sweetness.

8. Saleng Tai Chiang Coffee

Address12, Jalan Jelawat, Kawasan Perindustrian Senai 1, 81400 Kulai, Johor
Operating hoursDaily 7:00 AM – 2:00 PM, Tuesday Closed

The interior of Saleng Tai Chiang Coffee is rather simple, despite its 45-year-old origin. The concrete floor is gray, the Formica tables and stacking chairs are plastic, and the buzzing fans above our heads are bright, comfortable, clean, and cool.

Mr. Wong, the moss, makes all of the coffees. He employs a classic sock approach to brew coffee. Mr. Wong also roasts his own beans on an antiquated soot-blackened spinning drum over a wood fire at the back of the store (inside).

The specialty of Saleng Tai Chiang Coffee is the charcoal grilled kaya toast, which is also highly recommended. The fluffy white bread is charcoaled on all sides until charred. Each toast is individually scraped to remove the char surface. Kaya (coconut jam), margarine, peanut butter, or butter are spread on the toast.

Key Differentiators:

  • All the coffees are handmade
  • Famous for their freshly charcoal grilled kaya toast
  • Friendly service

Customer’s Review:

Coffee is the best tea room coffee I’ve ever had. It tastes the same when you buy it home and cook it yourself. Recommended!
