Background of Art Jamming
Art Jamming began as a social painting experience and was coined by Betty Cheung in 2000. It was meant to be a painting experience that invites people to be inspired, rejuvenated and invigorated. Contrary to popular belief, one need not be an experienced artist to enjoy art jamming. Instead, getting together to exchange ideas and knowledge was the core of an art jamming session.
Today, art jamming is essentially an activity where a group of people comes together and explores their creative side by trying their hands at canvas painting. Granted that some people may lack artistic confidence and would be reluctant in displaying their creative capabilities in a public setting, Art Jamming is specially created to take this into account and be all-inclusive to every level of talent and to everyone of any age. As such, art jamming is a versatile activity that can be attended for several purposes. From Corporate Icebreaker/Team Building events to Family Days Out during the weekends, Art Jamming would surely bring more laughter and delight into your life.
Art Jamming primarily makes use of acrylic paint. Paints like watercolour, metallic and even fluid art are often other options that are also available!
Types of Art Jamming
Granted that Art Jamming is a group activity, there are a few variations on how it could be conducted! Art Jammers mainly paint on canvas but can also be done on other mediums. Mainly, there are 4 popular ways you can art jam:
- Individual Art Jamming
Individual art jamming is where you paint your own canvas with others in a group setting. This type of art jamming is particularly useful for focusing on your personal creativity and painting skills. A great amount of effort would go into the brainstorming part even before you pick up the paintbrush to paint! However, this does not make it necessarily tougher. With your own individual canvas, there is a great deal of freedom as you have full authority over what to create. You can let your imagination run wild and create as simple or as complex a painting as you want!
- Group Art Jamming
Group art jamming naturally requires group effort. Although individual canvases are provided for this style, everyone’s canvas will come together to contribute to the overall combined big picture. Essentially, everyone’s canvas fits like a puzzle piece of the bigger picture – the picture decided by the group! That being said, this style requires more collaboration among the participants and coming to a consensus. On the flip side, it might actually be a great way to engineer creative synergy! More brains, more ideas!
- Neon Art Jamming
With its jazzy colours, neon art jamming is recently gaining traction. Neon art jamming, as you would have guessed, makes use of neon paint rather than the usual paint. But, the difference does not stop there. The whole neon art jamming experience is conducted under tailored room lighting that enhances the art jammers’ abilities to carry out their neon painting. Another aspect that makes neon art jamming more exciting is the mixing of neon colours. We put this to the test and were able to mix some of the colours to produce gradients! This is definitely a unique part of the process because this is different from the mixing of primary colours.
- Tote Bag Art Jamming
So far, the 3 types of art jamming above are done on canvas. Due to the versatile nature of acrylic paints, they can also be used to art jam on fabrics. One way of doing so is on tote bags. Tote bags are usually made from fabric woven out of cotton or linen on which acrylics dry up quickly. Watercolours are not recommended on tote bags because watercolours fade with time. On top of that, they dissipate after a wash.
